SpaceX closed a $40 billion equipment lease for next-generation Nvidia chips to power its terrestrial compute buildout, Tesla’s Cybercab fleet in Texas passed 500 vehicles and completed its first observed interstate rides, and Starship finished static fires on both stages ahead of a November attempt to catch the ship for the first time. Starlink service in Ukraine returned to full speed after a week of restrictions that Musk said closed an offensive-use loophole, while Neuralink engineers ran a 72-hour prototype sprint with a speech-restoration participant.

SpaceX locks $40 billion GPU lease with Apollo for Vera Rubin chips

SpaceX reached a binding commitment for an approximately $40 billion master finance lease covering GPUs and related data-center equipment with an entity managed by Apollo Global Management. Under the structure, the lessor buys the hardware and leases it to SpaceX for roughly five to five-and-a-quarter years, with leases beginning as equipment is delivered. The chips are Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin processors for SpaceX’s terrestrial compute buildout that powers Grok and its cloud services. SpaceX expects the deal to close by year-end subject to conditions, with lease schedules starting in the first half of 2027. CFO Bret Johnsen noted less-than-one-year payback periods on AI infrastructure investments. Musk posted that debt markets have largely closed to pure AI data-center companies without independent revenue, predicting “guppy-level death and consolidation” among more than 200 neoclouds, while SpaceX’s investment-grade rating and Starlink plus launch cash flow allowed it to proceed. The financing covers a substantial share of the $35–40 billion fourth-quarter capital expenditure SpaceX has guided.

Why it matters: The lease is the largest committed GPU financing on record and gives the combined SpaceX/xAI stack a multi-year path to scale terrestrial compute without relying solely on traditional debt markets that have tightened for AI-only borrowers. It directly funds the hardware that runs Grok models and any future orbital or hybrid compute plans, while highlighting the advantage of diversified cash flows from Starlink and launches. For anyone tracking the Musk ecosystem, this is the concrete step that turns the Super Intelligence segment’s recent revenue growth into sustained capacity.

Caveat: The agreement is a binding commitment subject to closing conditions; leases and chip deliveries begin in H1 2027, so near-term capacity does not change this quarter. Pricing details remain subject to finalization in some reporting.

Starlink speeds restored in Ukraine after Musk confirms throttling for offensive drone use

Source: Reuters, 24 Oct 2026 + Reuters; BBC, 25 Oct 2026

Ukrainian officials said Starlink and the military-grade Starshield service returned to normal high-speed operation on or around 24 October after roughly ten days of restrictions that limited connections above approximately 160 km/h. The limits had disrupted drone operations, logistics, and air-defense interceptors. Elon Musk stated on X that Ukraine’s military had violated Starlink terms of service by using the civilian commercial network for offensive drone strikes to kill people, and that the loophole was closed the prior week. He distinguished Starshield, which is controlled by the U.S. government. Ukraine’s Defense Minister and President Zelenskyy confirmed restoration of speeds sufficient for front-line needs, including drones above 400 km/h. Musk noted that Starlink remains critical to Ukraine’s defense and that cutting it entirely would collapse the front line, while emphasizing it is not a threat but a statement of fact.

Why it matters: The episode demonstrates operational control SpaceX retains over the commercial Starlink constellation even in active conflict zones, including the ability to enforce terms against high-speed mobile use for offensive strikes. It separates commercial Starlink policy from Starshield decisions made by the U.S. government and shows how quickly service parameters can change for a customer that relies on the network for battlefield communications. Anyone following Starlink as infrastructure should note the practical limits on dual-use in contested environments.

Caveat: Exact technical mechanism of the speed limits and the precise chain of decision-making between SpaceX and U.S. authorities remain incompletely public. Ukraine disputes that its systems used commercial Starlink for the long-range offensive strikes described.

Tesla Cybercab fleet tops 500 in Texas and begins interstate rides in Austin

Source: Drive Tesla, 29 Oct 2026 + Drive Tesla; Texas DMV registry trackers via Tesla News Wire, 27 Oct 2026

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles data showed Tesla’s registered Robotaxi fleet reaching approximately 1,080 vehicles by late October, of which more than 540 were Cybercabs, surpassing Model Ys for the first time. A rider posted video on 29 October of a Cybercab traveling on an Austin interstate at 55 mph in rainy conditions—the first public observation of the purpose-built, steering-wheel-free vehicle on an interstate. Model Y robotaxis had previously operated on highways. Tesla has stated production capacity for more than 125,000 Cybercabs per year at Gigafactory Texas and that the line is currently outpacing deployments. On the 21 October earnings call the company said it aims to begin limited Cybercab sales to fleet operators by the end of 2026 and to expand Cybercab ride service to Dallas in November. NHTSA’s Audit Query on Cybercab FMVSS self-certification has a sworn-response deadline of 30 October.

Why it matters: Crossing the majority-Cybercab threshold in the Texas registry and moving the vehicle onto interstates shows the dedicated robotaxi platform moving beyond initial Austin surface-street operations into higher-speed mixed traffic. The NHTSA response due today will clarify how Tesla justified certifying a vehicle without manual controls under existing standards written for human-driven cars. Combined with the year-end sales target, these steps map the near-term path for unsupervised autonomy deployment across the Tesla stack.

Caveat: Registry counts reflect registered vehicles, not necessarily the number in active service. Interstate operation has been observed but is not yet described as a general service feature. NHTSA has not issued a finding; the 30 October response is the next regulatory milestone.

Starship completes static fires on Ship 42 and Booster 22 ahead of Flight 15 dual-catch attempt

Source: Space.com, 29 Oct 2026 + Space.com; SpaceX X post, 28 Oct 2026

SpaceX conducted static-fire tests of Starship Ship 42 (the upper stage for Flight 15) on 26–27 October: a full-duration six-engine firing of approximately 60 seconds and a separate single-engine test simulating a deorbit burn. These followed a successful 33-engine static fire of Booster 22. SpaceX confirmed the tests on X. Elon Musk has targeted Flight 15 for sometime in November and has said the company intends to attempt catching both the Super Heavy booster and the Ship upper stage with the launch tower’s chopsticks, subject to regulatory approval—the first Ship catch attempt. Flight 14 in late September achieved orbit and deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites.

Why it matters: Successful static fires on both stages clear a major pre-flight milestone and keep the November window viable for the first dual-catch attempt. Catching the Ship would demonstrate the full reusability loop SpaceX needs for high-cadence Starlink V3 deployment, future Starmind orbital compute, and NASA HLS timelines. The tests show hardware readiness even while Flight 15’s exact date and license remain pending.

Caveat: No official launch date has been set and no FAA license for Flight 15 has been publicly confirmed as of 30 October. Dual catch requires regulatory approval and has not been attempted before for the Ship.

Neuralink engineers run 72-hour speech-restoration hackathon; Musk describes Telepathy product

Source: Neuralink X thread and YouTube, 29 Oct 2026; Elon Musk X posts, 30 Oct 2026 + Neuralink YouTube

Neuralink engineers spent 72 hours at the home of a speech-restoration study participant (an ALS patient) to prototype features that improve thought-based communication. Reported prototypes include automatic voice-activity detection that starts and stops decoding without a button press, injection of decoded speech into iPhone call microphone streams, a mobile speech app called Bloom, and a trigger for a Grok computer-use agent via thought of the phrase “Hey Neuralink.” Musk posted that Neuralink’s first product, Telepathy, enables high-speed communication with computers or humans simply by thinking and that output bandwidth will eventually exceed the fastest human speech or typing. He separately stated that Blindsight, the vision-restoration implant, is ready from an engineering standpoint and is waiting on regulatory approval.

Why it matters: The hackathon produces concrete, user-tested software features that move the speech BCI from basic decoding toward everyday phone and agent use for a participant who has lost the ability to speak. Combined with Musk’s product naming, it clarifies the near-term commercial path for Telepathy while underscoring that Blindsight remains gated by regulatory clearance. For the broader stack this shows Neuralink advancing patient capability in parallel with the AI and autonomy efforts.
