SpaceX Posts First Post-IPO Profit as Super Intelligence Overtakes Starlink; Special Committees Formed for Possible Tesla Merger

MUSK brief for 15–21 Oct 2026 — SpaceX swings to profit on AI compute, Musk endorses exploring a Tesla combination, Robotaxi hours lengthen in Austin, and tunnels show freight potential.

SpaceX’s third-quarter results turned the company profitable for the first time since its June IPO, with its Super Intelligence unit generating more revenue than Starlink. On the same call Elon Musk confirmed that independent special committees at both SpaceX and Tesla are reviewing a possible merger, calling the idea worthwhile while stressing it is far from certain and faces a high shareholder-vote bar. Elsewhere in the stack, Tesla extended Austin Robotaxi hours to midnight, a small FSD build began rolling out, and The Boring Company demonstrated a Tesla-powered tunnel vehicle carrying a shipping container.

SpaceX Q3 Earnings: $14.6 Billion Revenue, $4.4 Billion Net Income, AI Segment Surpasses Starlink

Source: SpaceX 8-K / earnings release + earnings call, 20 Oct 2026 + The Verge summary and Orbit Alpha numbers

SpaceX reported third-quarter revenue of $14.6 billion, up 161% year-over-year, income from operations of $2.8 billion, and net income of $4.4 billion—its first solidly profitable quarter as a public company. The Super Intelligence segment (compute, models, and software, including Grok) contributed $7.56 billion, an 830% jump, overtaking Connectivity/Starlink at $5.25 billion. Growth came from new cloud services agreements (customers include Anthropic and others), the mid-August Cursor acquisition (which added roughly $608 million), and wider Grok adoption. Nameplate compute capacity reached 1.7 GW by quarter-end, with further halls online in early October. Connectivity grew 69% with 13.6 million consumer Starlink subscribers. Space (launch) revenue was $1.8 billion. Capex was high, heavily weighted toward AI infrastructure. On the call Musk also noted plans to attempt catching both Super Heavy and Ship on the next Starship flight.

Why it matters: AI compute and software have become SpaceX’s largest revenue line, shifting the company’s economic center of gravity while Starlink continues to scale. The profit and capacity numbers give a clearer picture of how rapidly the Colossus-class buildout is being monetized and of the capital intensity still required. For anyone tracking the connected stack, this is the first public confirmation that rented training and inference capacity plus Grok products are already larger than the satellite internet business.

Caveat: Segment margins remain uneven (SI operating income was only $431 million after stock-based charges); subscriber adds lagged some expectations; nine-month results are still negative overall.

Special Committees Formed to Explore Tesla–SpaceX Merger; Musk Calls It “a Good Idea”

Source: SpaceX Q3 earnings call comments by Elon Musk, 20 Oct 2026 + TechCrunch and Business Insider

Both companies have formed special committees of independent directors, at shareholder request, to evaluate a potential combination. Musk, as a conflicted party, is excluded from the discussions. He said a merger would be “a good idea” because the companies are “pretty much in the superintelligence singularity,” with synergies in AI software, chip design (including Terafab), robotics, orbital compute, and connectivity. He stressed that no terms have been agreed, there is no guarantee of a deal, and on the Tesla side approval would require 50% of all shares outstanding—not merely a majority of those voting—calling that “quite a high hurdle.”

Why it matters: A combination would consolidate the highest-value pieces of the stack—launch, satellites, terrestrial energy and vehicles, autonomy, robotics, and now large-scale AI compute—under one publicly traded entity. The formation of independent committees is the first concrete procedural step; the voting threshold and conflict rules make any deal non-trivial even if the boards later recommend it. Followers of the ecosystem now have a clearer process map and timeline constraint rather than pure speculation.

Caveat: Committees have not agreed on terms; Musk’s support does not bind either board; Tesla’s full-shareholder majority requirement is unusually high and could fail on turnout alone.

Tesla Extends Austin Robotaxi / Cybercab Hours to Midnight; Incremental FSD Build Begins Rollout

Source: Tesla Robotaxi app notifications and rider reports, 16–17 Oct 2026 + Not a Tesla App; FSD update tracking, 20 Oct 2026 + Not a Tesla App release notes

Austin Robotaxi service (including Cybercab) now runs 6 a.m. to midnight, an extension from the prior 11 p.m. cutoff. The change restores the original launch-day window and leaves a six-hour overnight gap before 24/7 operation. Tesla has previously tied fuller overnight service to FSD v15 on the Robotaxi fleet. Separately, software update 2026.38.5.10 began a very early rollout on 20 October, carrying FSD (Supervised) v14.3.13 for HW4 vehicles and v14.3 Lite for HW3. Release notes largely match the prior build, citing upgraded reinforcement learning, a new vision encoder, and a rewritten compiler/runtime for faster reaction times; Automatic Collision Evasion remains listed.

Why it matters: Incremental hour extensions show operational progress on the unsupervised Robotaxi service while the remaining overnight gap highlights remaining perception limits (earlier Musk comments cited difficulty with small animals at night). The FSD point release keeps the supervised fleet current but does not yet represent the v15 step that has been linked to 24/7 Robotaxi hours. Riders and fleet-watchers gain a concrete schedule change; the broader autonomy map is still advancing in small, measurable steps.

Horizon: NOW

Evidence grade: shipped (hours) / demo-to-shipped (early FSD rollout)

Read or watch: SKIM

Caveat: Hours still stop at midnight; FSD remains supervised; rollout of 2026.38.5.10 is at the very beginning of the fleet; 24/7 still depends on future software and regulatory conditions.

Boring Company Demonstrates Tesla-Powered Liner Truck Carrying a Shipping Container

Source: The Boring Company X post, 19 Oct 2026 + TeslaNorth and InsideEVs

The company showed a modified Prufrock Liner Truck—powered by Tesla Model 3 battery packs and drive units—carrying a standard 20-foot shipping container. The post framed the vehicle as capable of moving freight through TBC tunnels and noted that the container “fits like a glove.” These electric liner trucks already haul concrete segments to the boring machines and are remotely piloted; the freight configuration is a capability demonstration rather than an announced commercial service.

Why it matters: It illustrates a concrete cross-stack use of Tesla powertrains inside Boring Company tunnels and expands the potential payload beyond construction materials. Whether freight service appears in Vegas Loop, Music City Loop, or future projects remains to be seen, but the hardware fit has now been shown publicly.

Evidence grade: demo

Caveat: No route, customer, timeline, or operating hours were announced; clearance inside the tunnel is tight; current liner trucks are limited to roughly 12 mph and modest range when loaded.
