Terafab stays in-house as Austin Cybercabs hit 169

MUSK brief for 1–7 Oct 2026 — Cybercab hours and fleet, AI5 memory, Q3 storage, Starlink passes, Cape gas line, Neuralink cursor mark, Nashville boring.

Listen

Austin’s paid Cybercab fleet kept growing and stayed open an hour later, Tesla locked a lower AI5 memory spec and reported Q3 vehicles plus 13.7 GWh of storage, and Musk said Tesla and SpaceX — not TSMC — will build and run Terafab. Starlink opened a shared-access beta, Neuralink posted a new cursor-speed mark from trial data, and The Boring Company put a third Nashville machine on a late-October launch. None of this is 24/7 unsupervised autonomy, a European robotaxi, or a finished chip fab.

Tesla and SpaceX will build and run Terafab, Musk says

Source: Firstpost, 7 Oct 2026, Elon Musk says Tesla and SpaceXAI will build and run Terafab

Elon Musk rejected a suggestion that TSMC would own and operate the planned Texas AI-chip complex. On X he wrote that Tesla and SpaceX will build and run the fab, and that there should be “ZERO doubt” about that. He left open a narrower role: TSMC could sublease part of the site. Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan told Bloomberg the same day that Intel remains involved. The complex is meant to make AI chips for Tesla and SpaceX. No production timetable, capacity, or process node was attached to the ownership claim. The statement does not start construction; it settles who is supposed to control the plant if it is built.

Why it matters: Inference and training chips sit under vehicles, Optimus, Grok, and any orbital-compute plan. Who runs the fab decides whether that supply stays inside the stack or is rented from a foundry. A Musk post is not a ground-breaking. It does fix the intended control structure after partner rumors.

Caveat: Ownership is a social-media claim plus an Intel comment. No SEC exhibit, capex schedule, or permit was published with it.

Austin Robotaxi runs until 11 p.m.; registered Cybercabs hit 169

Source: Not a Tesla App, 4 Oct 2026, Tesla Extends Robotaxi Hours in Austin, Adds 111 Cybercabs

Tesla’s Robotaxi account said Austin service now runs until 11 p.m., up from 10 p.m. Musk restated the change and tied the remaining night gap to seeing pets in the dark. Hours are still not 24/7. Texas DMV records cited by the same report put commercial Cybercabs at 169 as of 2 Oct, including 43 added on 1–2 Oct and 111 over about two weeks. Austin remains the only city with paid Cybercab hails; Model Y robotaxis operate more widely. A separate account said NHTSA granted an extension on Special Order answers for Audit Query AQ26002, which had been due 30 Sep and asks how a vehicle with no wheel or pedals meets federal standards written for human drivers. The extension is reported, not posted as a public Tesla filing.

Why it matters: Paid, purpose-built robotaxi service is no longer a one-week demo, but the operating window and the regulatory file are both still open. Fleet count changes how many unsupervised rides can be attempted. The night limit and the FMVSS questions are the actual constraints on scaling past Austin.

Caveat: Fleet totals come from state registration counts reported by outlets, not a Tesla 8-K. The NHTSA extension is a spokesperson account, not the sworn answers themselves.

Q3: 486,532 vehicles delivered, 13.7 GWh of storage deployed

Source: Tesla Investor Relations, 2 Oct 2026, Third Quarter 2026 Production, Deliveries & Deployments

Tesla’s 8-K exhibit said the company produced 464,391 vehicles and delivered 486,532 in the third quarter, and deployed 13.7 GWh of energy storage. Model 3 and Model Y were 457,387 produced and 478,237 delivered. Other models — Cybertruck, Semi, and leftover Model S/X — were 7,004 produced and 8,295 delivered. Deliveries ran about 22,000 ahead of production, a second straight quarter of inventory drawdown. Storage is the number that sits next to vehicle volume: 13.7 GWh is grid and home batteries, not cars. Financial results are scheduled after the close on 21 Oct. The release warns that deliveries and storage deployments are not a proxy for profit.

Why it matters: The car business is still the cash engine that funds autonomy, Optimus, and chips. A small year-over-year delivery dip with a storage print near last quarter’s 13.5 GWh says energy is holding while “other models” stay a thin slice. Earnings on 21 Oct is where robotaxi and Optimus spending will show up against that volume.

Caveat: No Semi breakout, no Cybercab production count, and no margin. Do not read the beat versus analyst consensus as an operating change.

AI5 memory set at 96 GB, after a same-week cut to 72 GB

Source: Drive Tesla Canada, 2 Oct 2026, Tesla Bumps AI5 Memory to 96GB

Musk said Tesla was cutting AI5 memory from 144 GB to 72 GB of LPDDR5, and AI6 from 216 GB to 144 GB, to get volume and cost down for Optimus. Hours later he said 72 GB was too low because Tesla would have been the only buyer of the minimum-density LP5 part, and set AI5 at 96 GB. AI6 stayed at the reduced 144 GB in the posts cited. He argued bandwidth matters more than capacity for the robot. Volume production is still described as a 2027 event; Samsung trial production on 2 nm at Taylor, Texas, has been reported separately and is not confirmed in a Tesla filing this week.

Why it matters: AI5 is the inference chip meant for cars and Optimus. Memory is a cost and supply lever, not a software unlock. The revision shows the spec is still moving with supplier mix, and that Optimus unit cost is already shaping the silicon before the robot is in volume.

Starlink Communities beta lets a dish owner sell access passes

Source: KeepTrack, 4 Oct 2026, Starlink Communities Program Opens Shared Access Beta

Starlink opened a beta that lets a qualified dish host share one terminal with nearby users. Starlink handles billing and access. Visitors buy hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly passes; reporting says a monthly pass covers up to four devices and the host receives a cut. Hosts need a bank account and tax ID. The product is aimed at apartments, campgrounds, rural stops, and event sites where a full subscription per user does not fit. It does not add satellites or raise the speed cap on an existing plan. Capacity still comes out of the same beam.

Why it matters: Starlink’s retail unit has been a dish and a subscription. A pass layer turns idle local capacity into a second product without a new launch. It also creates a host relationship SpaceX did not have when every user was a direct subscriber.

SpaceX unit asks Florida to approve a Cape methane pipeline

Source: Insurance Journal / Reuters, 7 Oct 2026, SpaceX Seeks Approval for Florida Gas Pipeline

Coastal Connect Services, a SpaceX subsidiary, asked the Florida Public Service Commission to approve a tariff for a 32.4-mile, 16-inch natural-gas line in Brevard County. The filing says truck supply and existing local lines cannot meet growing demand at Cape Canaveral, where methane is liquefied for Starship. Bloomberg reported the proposal on 5 Oct. A similar, shorter line has been requested at Boca Chica. No construction start or in-service date was set this week. Florida Starship launches are still a future pad, not a current cadence.

Why it matters: Orbital Starship is useless at rate if propellant arrives by truck. A dedicated gas line is the unglamorous half of a Florida launch rate. Approval is not a license to fly from the Cape.

Evidence grade: filing

Caveat: The petition is for a tariff and facilities authority. It is not an FAA launch license and not proof the line will be built on the requested route.

Neuralink posts 11.32 bits per second after 50,000 hours of trial data

Source: TeslaNorth, 2 Oct 2026, summarizing Neuralink’s 1 Oct 2026 blog, Neuralink Sets New BCI Record

Neuralink said participants have streamed more than 50,000 hours of unlabeled neural data since the human trial began, with the first participant alone over 9,000 hours. Decoders pretrained on each person’s history produced a new cursor mark of 11.32 bits per second, above a prior 10.39. The company put the median near 10 bits per second. Six participants set personal records. One decoder was still in use more than a year and a half later; another held about 10 bits per second across five days. Click decoding got cleaner. This is cursor control in a paralysis trial, not vision, speech, or walking.

Why it matters: The useful change is stability from the patient’s own history, not a one-session demo. A higher bit rate with less recalibration is what makes a implant usable on an ordinary day. It does not expand the approved indication.

Caveat: Company blog, not a peer-reviewed paper or an FDA label change. Bit rate is a lab cursor metric.

Nashville: two boring machines mining, a third set for late October

Source: The Boring Company, 1 Oct 2026, Music City Loop blog; Nashville Post, 5 Oct 2026, Third tunneling machine launch set for late October

The Boring Company said Prufrock-MB1 and Prufrock-MB2 are tunneling at the same time on the Music City Loop, a planned pair of one-way tunnels on a roughly 19-mile airport route. Prufrock-MB3 is scheduled to launch in late October. Prufrock-MB4 is being built, with a target of four machines underground before year-end. The airport authority and the convention-center authority have approved a station connection and a tunnel easement. A first residential station agreement and hotel terms were also noted. Station design and permits are still open. No passenger service date was given.

Why it matters: Vegas remains the only operating Loop. Nashville is the test of whether a second city can run more than one machine without stalling on stations. Four machines is a construction plan, not a ridership plan.

Caveat: Official post does not give feet mined this month. Approvals are easements and connections, not a finished tunnel.

Cybercab goes on display in Paris, not into service

Source: CryptoBriefing, 6 Oct 2026, Tesla showcases Cybercab at Paris Motor Show

Tesla will show the two-seat Cybercab, with no wheel and no pedals, at the Paris Motor Show from 12 to 18 Oct. Attendees will not ride in it. The booth is also set to include FSD test drives in six current models, Optimus Gen 2, Model 3, Model Y, and energy products. Paid Cybercab rides remain an Austin fact. European unsupervised service is not approved by this booking.

Why it matters: A show car is how Tesla puts the no-controls design in front of regulators and buyers who cannot hail one. It does not move the geofence. The useful European product at the booth is supervised FSD in cars that still have controls.
